Frequently asked questions

What are the different louvre sizes? How do I choose?

Louvre size should be chosen depending on the size of the window and the effect you want to achieve with your shutter. Often, larger louvre sizes work on larger windows as they let in more light, however smaller louvre sizes offer greater privacy.

Louvre sizes tend to range between 47mm and 64mm although 32mm louvers work well in bathrooms or café style installations.

At your installation survey, we can advise you on the best louvre size to enhance the look of the room and achieve exactly what you want with your shutters.

How many shutter panels will I need for my window?

Generally, a window looks best with four panels – two opening as pairs either way – although bay windows and larger windows may work differently. We usually design them so that all panels will open away from the middle of the window for the most effective look. However, as each window and room is different, there are a large number of possibilities and exceptions which we can advise on to get the best look.

There are also considerations of where the panels are going to fold back to, and whether they are going to encroach upon the room space when they are open.

Large windows, and those where tracking may be needed at the top, work better with an even number of panels – the number will depend of the size of the window.

Ultimately, the precise placement, style and size of your window will determine panel numbers.

What colours and stains are available?

There are a large number of colours and stains available, varying across each of the four shutter ranges. In several of the ranges we can offer any colour you would like from the Dulux or Farrow and Ball range which provides even more choice.

Can shutters be installed on any window?

Yes, interior wooden shutters can be installed on almost any window, as well as French doors and patio sliding doors. They can be installed equally as effectively as room dividers, so the possibilities are endless.

What do I need to do to maintain my shutters?

Keeping your shutters clean simply requires a feather duster, damp sponge or a vacuum cleaner which can be run over them. Those shutters which are installed painted should not need repainting for many years, making them one of the most maintenance free window dressings available.

How long from order will it take to get my shutters?

Shutters will be available and ready for us to install them 6 to 8 weeks after the order has been placed and the deposit received. This allows time for them to be custom built to your exact window specifications.

What if my windows aren’t square?

Every window is different and it is very difficult to find a perfectly square window. Therefore, the shutters are fitted using subtle side battens or frames which provide a fix to ensure the shutter fits the window and looks straight.
